Notes and Test review

Today in Western civ we took notes in class until Sydney and Anna finished their tests, then we started going over the test, here are the notes:


  1. The Roman Republic
    1. Founded in 753 BC according to legend, by Romulus and Remus, twin sons of the god of Mars and a Latin Princess.
    2. They were raised by a she-wolf
    3. the twins decided to build a city, were they built had lots of fertile land
  2. Romes Geography
    1. built on 7 hills, by the Tiber River
  3. The first Romans
    1. Earliest settlers 1000 to 500 BC
    2. 3 groups Latin, Greeks, and Etruscans
    3. Latin built built original settlement (first Romans)
    4. Greeks established colonies along southern Italy and Sicily, became prosperous
    5. Etruscans metalworkers and engineers, influenced writing and architecture 
  4. The early Republic 
    1. an Etruscan became king of Rome
  5. Patricians and Plebeians 
    1. Patricians were wealthy land owners, who held most of the power
    2. Plebeians were the common farmers, artisans and merchants, made up most of the population
    3. Tribunes protected plebeians from unfair acts of patrician officials.
  6. Twelve Tables
    1. written law code was an important victory for the plebians
  7. Government under the Republic
    1. Consuls, like kings commanded the army, and directed the government ruled for a term of only 1 year could not be elected again for ten years 
    2. Senate, aristocratic branch of Romes government, had 300 members.

Today in Western civ. we took more notes and got ready for our test. Here are some of the notes. Why? because the senators saw Caesar's rise in power as a huge threat to their political viability How? they lured him to the Senate, stabbing him 23 times, making sure all were involved brutus helped octavion was next in line republic = no longer Julius Caesar'sgrand nephew- and adopted son- Octavion takes over at 18! makes a triumvirate with Marc Antony ( an experiences general) and lepidus (politician) This is the second triumvirate octavion forces the weak Lepidus to retire he and marc antony become rivals mark antony and cleopatra partner up : personally militarilly politically  economically  octavion  defeats them at the battle of Actium he is now the unchallenged ruler of Rome now called "caesar augustus" imperator= supreme military leader now rome is an empire 40 yrs of ruling as a emperor pax romana= roman peace pax romana lasted 207 year...
