Notes and Test review
Today in Western civ we took notes in class until Sydney and Anna finished their tests, then we started going over the test, here are the notes:
- The Roman Republic
- Founded in 753 BC according to legend, by Romulus and Remus, twin sons of the god of Mars and a Latin Princess.
- They were raised by a she-wolf
- the twins decided to build a city, were they built had lots of fertile land
- Romes Geography
- built on 7 hills, by the Tiber River
- The first Romans
- Earliest settlers 1000 to 500 BC
- 3 groups Latin, Greeks, and Etruscans
- Latin built built original settlement (first Romans)
- Greeks established colonies along southern Italy and Sicily, became prosperous
- Etruscans metalworkers and engineers, influenced writing and architecture
- The early Republic
- an Etruscan became king of Rome
- Patricians and Plebeians
- Patricians were wealthy land owners, who held most of the power
- Plebeians were the common farmers, artisans and merchants, made up most of the population
- Tribunes protected plebeians from unfair acts of patrician officials.
- Twelve Tables
- written law code was an important victory for the plebians
- Government under the Republic
- Consuls, like kings commanded the army, and directed the government ruled for a term of only 1 year could not be elected again for ten years
- Senate, aristocratic branch of Romes government, had 300 members.
