Today in Western Civilization we took notes on "The spread of Hellenistic Culture." Here are some of the notes:

  1. Alexander's Empire
    1. Philip builds Macedonian Empire
      1. Philip is Alexander's dad + King of Macedonia
      2. King of Macedonia who invaded Greece and won!
      3. He was going to conquer Persia, but he was murdered
    1. Alexander names himself king at age 20
      1. Alexander defeats Persia!! (Darius III)
      2. When young, he was tutored by Aristotle, and relied on the Iliad
      3. Alexander vs. king Darius: Alexander (outnumbered) beats all odds and defeats Darius
      4. Crowned Pharaoh in 332 BC, he told everyone he was a god
      5. Alexander's Army moves East to Mesopotamia, Darius' Army outnumbered Alexander again, and Alexander wins! Battle at Gaugamela. Alexander wins again by using the Phalanx.
      6. Alexander continues East to Persepolis, and burned + destroyed it
    1. Alexander's other Conquests
      1. Alexander now reigns as Unchallenged ruler of South Asia.
      2. 326 BC Hydaspes River, and defeated India.
      3. been fighting for 11 years and marched 11,000 miles, so his army turned home.
      4. 323 BC Army reaches Babylon. Alexander settled there.
      5. Alexander died at age 32, never carried out full plans, Fever?
