Today in Honors Human Geography we talked about excellence, through the message of Garcia.


  • "A Message to Garcia" was published in 1889
  • it was made into a pamphlet
  • it went viral, and sold 40 million copies
  • it was translated into 37 different languages
  • it was made into two individual movie, one in 1916, and one in 1936
  • it became a slang expression
  • Setting: Spanish American War
  • Garcia: a revolutionary, seeking Cuban independence from Spain
  • McKinley: 25th president, was assassinated by an anarchist
  • Tallest North American mountain, was named after McKinley (Then later renamed to its former name)
  • Rowan: army officer, who delivered the message to Garcia

Vocab
  • perihelion: Planet in its orbit closest to the sun 
  • slipshod: careless, lackadaisical 
  • imbecility: incapacity, stupidity
  • Stenographer: a person who takes dictation in short hand
  • missive: a letter, especially a long, official one
We also learned about the word Areté : The Greek word for "living up to ones full potential."
